📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Prepare and Soak the Whetstone
Submerge the combination water stone in a container of clean water for 10 to 15 minutes until air bubbles stop rising. Place the stone into its rubber base on a flat workbench, coarse 1000-grit side facing up. Keep a spray bottle nearby to lubricate the stone surface as you work.
- • Air bubbles cease emerging from the submerged stone.
- • The stone rests completely stable on the bench without wobbling.
- • Using oil on a water stone or letting the stone surface dry out while sharpening.
Flatten the Chisel Back
Lay the back (flat side) of the chisel completely flat against the 1000-grit stone, pressing down firmly with your index and middle fingers near the tip. Move the chisel back and forth in smooth, even figure-eight or linear strokes across the stone. Continue until the first 1 to 2 inches of the blade back have a consistent scratch pattern across the entire width.
- • A uniform matte scratch pattern extends across the entire width of the blade back near the cutting tip.
- • No low unground spots remain along the front edge.
- • Lifting the handle, which rounds the back of the chisel instead of keeping it perfectly flat.
Lock the Bevel Angle in the Honing Guide
Slide the chisel into the honing guide with the bevel facing downward toward the wheel. Adjust the blade extension so that the chisel's existing factory bevel (typically 25 or 30 degrees) sits flush against the whetstone surface. Tighten the guide's clamp screw firmly by hand to lock the blade square.
- • The entire flat bevel angle contacts the stone evenly without rocking.
- • The chisel is clamped perpendicular to the guide body.
- • Clamping the chisel crooked in the guide, which creates an uneven, skewed cutting edge.
Grind the Bevel and Raise a Burr
Place the honing guide roller and chisel bevel on the 1000-grit stone. Apply balanced downward pressure with both hands and roll the chisel back and forth across the stone along its full length for 20 to 30 strokes. Stop and gently feel the flat back of the chisel with your thumb moving off the edge; you should feel a continuous wire edge (burr) across the full width.
- • A fresh, uniform bevel surface is visible across the front of the tool.
- • A tactile wire burr can be felt extending along the entire flat back edge.
- • Stopping before a full, continuous burr has formed across the entire width of the blade.
Polish the Bevel and Remove the Burr
Flip the stone to the fine 6000-grit side and mist it with water. Roll the honing guide over the fine stone for 15 to 20 strokes to polish the bevel to a mirror finish. Remove the chisel from the guide, lay the back flat against the fine stone, and give it 5 light strokes to snap off the wire burr.

- • The wire burr is completely removed, leaving both bevel and back smooth to the touch.
- • Lifting the chisel off flat when de-burring the back on the 6000-grit stone.
Strop and Test the Edge
Pull the chisel bevel backward along a compound-loaded leather strop for 10 trailing strokes at the matching angle, then repeat with 5 trailing strokes flat on the back. Test the sharpness by making a light push cut across the end-grain of a scrap piece of wood without using a mallet.
- • The cutting edge slices cleanly through wood fibers, leaving a glossy, smooth cut without tear-out.
- • Thin, paper-like wood curls peel away with minimal effort.
- • Pushing the chisel forward into the leather strop instead of pulling it backward, which cuts and ruins the strop.
